Obesity

I am considering obesity a disease of civilization. Obesity is defined as having a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or higher. Its prevalance in America is above 40% and has had a continued uninterrupted rise since the 1990s. Obesity is more of  an issue in the southern, midwestern, and eastern states but it is still found everywhere. Studies find that individuals of higher income class have a lower frequency of obesity compared to those of low to middle income class. It has also been found that those with higher education have a lower obesity frequency.

Individuals with obesity are at much higher risk than others for serious health problems. The serious health problems include heart disease (which is the number one leading cause of death in America), certain cancers (cancer is the 2nd leading cause of death in America), stroke, Hypertension, Type 2 Diabetes, high cholesterol, Osteoarthritis, Sleep apnea, and can negatively affect your mental health thus causing some mood disorders such as Depression.

How does obesity occur? I cant speak for everyone but there are many reasons. Mostly due to lifestyle choices such as poor eating habits, poor nutrition, and lack of exercise. I know for a lot of people eating healthy can be really expensive especially when you have dietary ailments or when you are a broke college student, etc. There has also been a large increase in processed food in the United States that greatly exacerbates the obesity problem.

If we do not educate individuals and help them when they're in need, this problem will only continue to get worse. We need to restrict such easy access to processed junk food, make a larger quantity of healthy food for an affordable price, and stop sitting at desks all day. The covid-19 pandemic has only added more stress to our lives thus making this problem worse. We need to make some serious lifestyle changes. We need more education, more affordable healthy food for everyone, and more time for ourselves and movement.

  1. Hello Haley,

I enjoyed reading your blog post as mine from this module was very similar. I wrote about diabetes and how it affects a good portion of the U.S. population, including some of my own family members. I would also like to add that with the hustle and bustle of every life nowadays, it is very difficult to make a healthy meal or get adequate exercise daily. Unfortunately, if this does not change, obesity will continue to be a problem in America. Overall, great post!

  2. Haley,

I like the way that you worked to incorporate multiple perspectives into what could be causing obesity, and how you made a point to discuss what other health concerns can arise from obesity. I think it is really important to recognize how lifestyle choices can snowball into a multitude of other health problems. I also absolutely agree with your point that we need more education and affordable lifestyle options for all individuals. This was an enjoyable blog post to read and I appreciated that you included a graphic as well- great job!

  4. Hi Haley,

I really liked your blog post and how your blog is setup as a whole! I chose a disease similar to yours, diabetes. While researching my topic I found out that being obese significantly raises your chance of getting type II diabetes, which you talked about in your post. I liked the info graphs you added in to your post as well!

  5. Haley!

I could tell your blog post was well researched with a wide number reliable resources. I also think it was interesting to hear the breakdown of geographical areas and prevalence obesity. I'm glad you mentioned several options on solutions to prevent diabetes. I get very passionate when it comes to the unfortunate affects of food deserts and scarcity within communities that you wouldn't think of. And not only is the access to fruits and vegetables an issue to address, but also the affordability of produce that needs to be addressed. Well done!
